Almost every answer about France depends on the calendar: festival weeks, harvest, bloom windows, tide tables and off-season closures all move the recommendation.

How you feel about driving

Some regions here work perfectly by train, others need a car. Telling us whether narrow rural roads are fine or out of the question changes the shape of the route entirely.
